What Is a Synchronous Belt?

How a synchronous belt works

A synchronous belt is a toothed belt that engages with matching pulley grooves. The belt and pulley geometry work together to transmit motion and maintain the intended speed relationship. Correct selection, installation and tension are essential.

Rubber and polyurethane constructions

Rubber and polyurethane are common belt body materials. Reinforcement, tooth facing, surface treatment and manufacturing construction vary by specification. The material name alone does not establish temperature resistance, chemical compatibility, life, noise or allowable load.

Tooth profile and pulley compatibility

Specify the tooth profile and pitch together with the belt width and pitch length or tooth count. Use compatible pulley geometry. A matching appearance, similar dimensions or another manufacturer’s profile name does not prove interchangeability.

Information needed for selection

Provide the driven equipment and application; input and output speed; operating and peak load; drive layout; pulley tooth counts and centre distance; belt profile, length and width; duty cycle; and operating environment. For replacement work, provide the existing belt identification and pulley drawing or sample reference.

Installation and inspection

Check pulley condition, alignment, guarding and the agreed installation tension. Follow the equipment and product instructions. Inspect the drive for wear, damage, contamination and tracking problems. Claims such as “maintenance-free” should not replace an inspection plan.

Special applications

Vehicle drives, EPS steering, food-contact equipment and static-sensitive environments require additional validation or documentation. Agree the applicable technical and approval requirements before selecting a belt.

Request a JOMO quotation

JOMO supplies rubber and polyurethane synchronous belt categories and matching pulley requirements. Send the drawing or sample reference, dimensions, quantity and operating data using Request a Quote or [email protected]. The quotation confirms the final specification and supply terms.
